Queen's Ferry Hotel

Queen Ferry's Hotel - probably the oldest pub in NZ as they first served liquor on April 19, 1865. Apparently it was a well-known drinking place for criminals back then. Now they have refurbished the place and have added new furniture and decorative wallpapers. Queen's Ferry is a place full of rich history and is definitely known for their good food and extensive variety of drinks.

The bar - usually pretty crowded at night

Addition of new comfy sofas - good for lunchtimes when they get really busy.

Beef Lasagna ($15)

We had the beef lasagna, which was served with salad (or you can change it to fries) and you have a choice of beef or vegetarian. There were many layers of rich beef and cheese mixed with tomato sauce that tasted fantastic. I would say they receive 5 stars for quality however, the portion is a little too small for my liking. They do give lots of salad though, which is a thumb's up for those who want to cut back on their waistline. Or you could screw the healthier choice and change it to fries instead, which is what I always do. Mmm.

The lasagna came piping hot and it seemed deliciously yummy. Upon having the first bite, my tastebuds swoon with joy.

Queen's Ferry Fish & Chips ($19.50)

Upon first glance, $19.50 for Fish & Chips seems quite expensive especially when it's available all around NZ - but then again, it's their speciality. The first time I tried it, I thought it was one of the best fish & chips I've ever tasted in New Zealand. As taken from the menu, the fish they use is, "Monteith's beer battered catch of the day". Not to worry, the fish they use is always satisfying and the skin is really crispy.

The fish is also served with thick and chunky fries which go extremely well with their delicious tartare sauce (homemade). Just like the lasagna, the fish and chips are served piping hot which adds on to the delight of the person eating it.

I like the presentation of this meal - from the huge squared shaped plates they use to the way the fish is neatly stacked on top of the crispy fries. It certainly builds up an appetite! They also give generous portions; this meal is suitable for 2 small eaters or for 1 big eater, such as myself. They do give quite a lot of salad and fries, which are really tasty. Satisfaction is certainly guaranteed with this meal and for the price they charge, the quality here is consistent and Queen's Ferry has lived up to my expectations.

Since this is one of my all-time favourite meals, I think it deserves to have 4 pictures taken from different angles, with and without flash, don't you think?

Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Chicken Breast ($21)

Our first impression of this dish was that it looked rather miserable as compared to my huge portion of fish and chips. This was chicken breast wrapped in bacon and served on parmesan risotto. Personally this dish did not rate very high up in my list because I could not really taste the bacon that was supposedly wrapped around the chicken breast and the rice tasted rather bland to me. I'm also not a huge fan of chicken breast, I prefer drumstick.

Food King commented that the chicken breast was rather soft and did not have much taste. The cheesy rice (risotto) saved the day instead because it was rather tasty. Overall the portion was a little small and we definitely preferred the fish and chips.

Bacon and Mushroom Fettuccini ($15)

My friend ordered this and she was quite satisfied with the meal. The fettuccini wasn't overdone which made it chewy and it went well with the bacon and mushrooms mixed with the tomato sauce. She preferred the bacon with the pasta but I also liked the mushrooms as they added extra flavour to the meal. A classic dish.

Service was good as the food was promptly served. Orders are placed at the bar and Nick, the friendly bar manager is usually there to assist you and he can answer any queries you have about the food. The waitresses there are also pleasant and they serve the food with a smile, which makes us feel at ease.

Queen's Ferry is one of my favourite places to go to in Auckland City, as every time I dine there I'm not disappointed. They consistently provide good food and good service and they maintain their standard, which is vital for a restaurant's success these days with most places rising their prices and decreasing their portions.
So far the portions have not decreased at Queen's Ferry and I do hope their prices don't rise. Other than that, I really recommend their Fish & Chips and I look forward to dining there again!

Benjarong of Howick

Welcome to Benjarong, a thai restaurant with a warm and homey ambience. Parents brought us here when Food King was in NZ, so the 4 of us went for dinner together.

Like the ambience, I thought the decor was really pretty. They have thai figurines as well and they make you feel like you're back in Thailand. Cute hats!

For starters, we decided to try Combination Thai Entree ($13.50). Their menu description of this was, "A bit of everything". Not really, in my opinion. As you can see, the entree had 1 stick of satay (meat on a stick), a spring roll, a curry puff and some fried chicken. Overall rating of food was only so-so, it wasn't worth the price at all.

My parents suspected that it one entree would not be enough, so they ordered two.

We ordered the one of my favourite thai dishes, Pad Thai Prawns ($26.50). You can also have Pad Thai Chicken ($23.50). This is one of my all-time thai dishes. They served the usual nuts, chilli and beansprouts by the side and we mixed them together. The taste was authentic, noodles were quite chewy and the prawns were relatively fresh. Tasted good but the portion was pathetic.

Roasted Duck Curry ($29.50). Thick & spicy curry, which went very well with rice. There was not much duck and there were lots of vegetables so that's something that they should improve on.

Kang Kaew-Wan Benjarong ($25.50). In other words, Thai Green Curry. We chose chicken for our meat (you can also choose beef). Didn't like the green curry here as much as other places because there was a strange smell, which I didn't like. Mum says it was because of the bamboo shoots; the smell actually spoiled the whole taste for me. On the other hand, there was a bit too much coconut milk inside the curry. As for the chicken portions, it was the same case for the Red Duck Curry; too much veg, too little chicken.

Pla Snapper ($33.50). Deep fried whole snapper with chilli-corriander. The fish was spicy, as requested by my parents. It was also crispy and the skin was yummy too. It didn't taste fishy, as the tamarind sauce and chilli taste was over-powering. Nicely done.

Kata Benjarong ($26.50). Beef served on a sizzling hot plate (you can also choose chicken). Served with green vegetables. The meat was quite tender and the sizzling smell made me salivate as it was brought over to our table by the thai waiter. Mildly-spicy. Yum!

Overall the food is good although service could have been a lot better; the thai waiter who served our main meals was quite unfriendly (barely any eye-contact and no smiles) and when we were enquiring about the desserts, one of the older waitresses who looked around 40+ came to answer my parents' questions. Unfortunately, she was quite arrogant and impatient when doing so. When my parents asked her a question about the desserts, she rudely answered them and this put us off. We think that she is a supervisor because of the way she ordered the other waitresses/waiters around.

The prices here are also quite up-market. Pad-Thais in NZ are on average, about $20 (with prawns) and red duck/green curries are around $20-$22.

I've re-checked the prices since the last time I came here (which was not long ago) and the prices have dramatically increased since then ($5-$6 increase per dish). From my last visit here, the food was good but the prices are too expensive as compared to so many other thai restaurants around. Nothing outstanding here and unless I find something that I really love here and can't find in other thai places (which I haven't) or the prices decrease, I would not be interested in patronising this place again - not with so many thai restaurants around Auckland. Especially not with the sucky service we encountered on our last visit.

Updates

Hey guys, Food Queen here and just an update to let everyone know that most posts here are scheduled in advance and are not actually written or posted at the time shown on the blog. The reason I'm posting this is because yesterday a friend just asked how we were going to blog if I am going to be away... Hahaha, oops! =))

Anyway, I will be leaving for Sydney tomorrow and will be having a great holiday there!! We'll also be heading over to Gold Coast, and I simply cannot wait! Excitinggggg. White sandy beaches, crystal clear blue waters, awesome theme parks, exploring Sydney (last time I went there was years ago!) and of course, spending quality time with family, relatives & cousins that are gonna be there too.

We'll be spending Christmas & New Year's over there that's why I've already scheduled all our posts so that this blog will be regularly updated, hehe.

After I leave Australia, I'll be back in NZ for 1 night before I fly back to Singapore for non-stop shopping & eating!! Woohoo. Buffets and suppers, here I come! I've seen pictures of Singapore's new Somerset 313 and The Ion and I was like, whoa. I also cannot wait to see Singapore Universal Studios, Marine Life Park & Equarius Water Park, not sure if they'll be ready by 2010 though. Perhaps next year :)

Happy holidays everyone!!

Ming Court

Ming Court - the chinese restaurant in Skycity that is infamous for their horrible Yum Char buffet.
We heard about Ming Court's yum char buffet and read on the internet how Skycity kept raving about how authentic the yum char here is and what a large spread their buffet has.

First up, we made a reservation for the buffet lunch. When we got there, the chinese manager at the counter told us that we had to sit outside because all the tables inside were full. We were pretty hungry at that time and didn't bother checking inside because we had no reason to doubt him - so we agreed to sit outside (shown in pics).

The other thing was that I was talking to one of the chinese managers at the counter and asked him if I could have a look at the yum char buffet menu. He then told me that they didn't have a buffet menu and the food comes by on trolleys and I could just pick whatever I want plus there are a few fried dishes, porridge & desserts at the back that I could pick up anytime. I wanted to see what dishes they serve during the buffet but the manager assured me that I could be contented with their variety and quality of dishes. I asked him approximately how many dishes there were in total and he replied, "more than 30".

We waited for 15mins for the food to be served however, they took some time so I went inside to have a look. Imagine how shocked I was when I saw how many free tables there were inside, with a nicer and quieter ambience. They also have tables for 2 by the side (look on the left, see the caucasian couple?) so there was no reason for them to insist that we take a table outside.

Was quite irritated by this point of time but decided not to make a fuss as the food served on trolleys came by. I was also quite pissed at the way they couldn't tell us which dishes were available because if the trolleys came out from the kitchen, they would pass by almost all the tables inside first before coming outside! So if we were sitting outside and didn't know what dishes to expect, we would be getting all the food that everyone else is sick of (since they have first choice, unlike us). All the more sought-after dishes would be gone by the time the trolleys reached our table. Extremely frustrating.

The Yam Balls (left) were served cold and were rather oily. There was very little BBQ pork served inside.
Carrot Cake was also served cold and this was basically tasteless. I'm a big fan of Carrot Cake and so far, this has been the worst one I've ever tried in my entire life. Oily and tasteless, what a combination.

Fried dumplings (wanton). As you can see from the picture, the meat portion of the dumpling was seriously tiny and there was so much fried stuff. It was really gross, the way they kept serving all the fried food in a pathetic attempt to make us full. Everyone knows that carbs and deep fried food makes you full in a really short time. After eating about 2-3 of these fried dumplings, we felt quite sick and didn't have any more.

Ha Gao (Prawn Dumplings). One of my all-time yum char favourites. I would say this is the best (or only edible) dish at Ming Court's yum char buffet. The prawns were quite big although they were not refined, as compared to other yum char restaurants in Auckland.
The only reason we could actually get to eat this was because after waiting for approx 20mins, the only trolleys that kept coming out were the ones serving fried food or vegetable dumplings which tasted horrendous. I finally asked a waiter if they had any prawn dumplings and he said, "yes". So we requested for 2 plates of the prawn dumplings which were served about 10mins later.

Meat dumplings. Although we were told they were meat dumplings (can't remember if it was pork or chicken), there were huge peas and chunks of carrots inside which were tasteless. The actual meat portion was so tiny that when you take a bite of the dumpling, you only taste the vegetables. Completely unrefined.

Top: Beef balls - there was a strong meaty smell about this dish and there was a foul after-taste smell after eating them. It tasted rather sourish and we got sick of the taste after the first bite.

Bottom left: Pork and Mushroom Dumpling (Siew Mai) - although they were quite large, they were not appealing to the tastebuds and I couldn't taste the mushrooms at all (unlike better yum char places). Siew Mais are one of my favourite yum char dishes and considering the fact that we only ordered 1 plate of this says something.

Bottom right: Pork ribs - one of the better tasting dishes at Ming Court. Although the meat didn't taste like it was marinated at all, the sauce that came along with the dish gave the meat a more flavoursome taste. I wouldn't say this dish was good because the only reason we managed to finish a plate was because of the sauce.

Self-serviced fried rice - the only thing that made this dish more appetizing was the BBQ pork.

Self-serviced Century Egg Porridge - one of the worst dishes at Ming Court. The first thing anyone would notice was that although it's called Century Egg Porridge, there were no century eggs inside the porridge. Even when I was scooping the porridge myself, I couldn't find a single century egg inside. I couldn't even find a quarter of a century egg inside, let along half. There was basically no century eggs inside, just fish. To top it off, the porridge was tasteless and it was literally like rice and water, nothing else added.

BBQ Pork Pastry - Same thing as all the other dishes, the pastry was cold and there was extremely little BBQ pork inside. It was more like an empty pastry. We had to specially order this dish as no trolleys came by serving this and we could not imagine a yum char restaurant not serving this. Apparently my earlier suspicions were right - since our table was outside, we got all the crappy food by the time it reached us.

BBQ Pork Bun (Char Siew Bao) - Exact same scenario as the BBQ Pork Pastry; the bun was extremely thick and there was very little pork inside. We also had to order this from the waiter.

Prawn rice noodle rolls (Chee Cheong Fun) - I never saw the waiters serving this on their trolleys; we had to ask them (yet again) to serve it to us. The waiter told us it would take about 10mins because they had to steam it - it only came 20mins later and after a complaint by me that it was taking far too long. When it finally arrived, we were sorely disappointed.

The noodle rolls were flat and I must emphasize, completely tasteless. A sweet soy sauce is usually poured over the Chee Cheong Fun but in Ming Court, they did not even bother serving sauce, we had to ask them for it. Even after asking, the waiter served us with a light soy sauce, not the usual sweet soy sauce that complements the dish.
It was unlike anything I've ever tasted before, terribly disgusting.

BBQ pork rice noodle rolls - Exactly the same as the prawn rolls.

After experiencing so many incidents of having to specifically request the waiters for a dish, we were so frustrated we complained to one of the waitresses there, letting her know that we've only been getting the trolleys with the fried food and vegetable/pork dumplings and we never saw other dishes such as the BBQ pork buns or the rice noodle rolls. I asked her what other dishes they had that we could order (since we weren't getting any from the trolleys). She said that she couldn't think of any at the moment and said, "how about the Fried Calamari?" (before rushing off to another table).

We're usually big eaters with a large appetite but the food at Ming Court was so bad that even though we were neither full nor satisfied, we stopped trying their almost inedible yum char dishes and went over to have a look at the dessert table.

Egg tarts - One of the better desserts at Ming Court; the egg custard was sweet and the pastry was soft.
The dessert on the right had some kind of fruity citrus taste, we took a bite and didn't finish the rest.

Strawberry Jam with some sourish mousse - the jam was far too sweet and it didn't taste nice at all.

From the self service table

The noodles had practically no ingredients and were drizzling in oil. The food was also not regularly replenished.

Some fruits

As you can see from my earlier comments, the food here was downright horrendous - it was tasteless and the yum char was completely unrefined. My parents had warned us against this place because a couple of their other friends had told them how bad the food was but we still decided to give it a go. The whole outing was a waste of time and stomach space.

It was the worst yum char I've ever tried in my entire life. Even big eaters such as myself could not bare to have another bite of the unappetizing food. Although one could argue that it is after all, a $22.95 buffet - what else could one expect? For one thing, $22.95 in NZ could buy a really delicious meal and that even though it was a buffet and we weren't expecting anything near Crystal Jade standards, the food here was seriously below standards. Since it's located right at Skycity Casino, tourists who try this place may think this is how yum char usually tastes like.

The waiters who served us were generally polite and while some waiters served us with a smile and some did not, most of them could not speak much english, so it was a hassle even trying to order the dishes that we wanted or asking them to refill our water, which they never refilled on their own.
The managers there were the ones who gave bad service - as we were eating, we saw one of the chinese managers going around the caucasian tables, asking them how the food was but simply ignoring all the asian tables, despite the tables being right next to each other. As a caucasian couple got up to pay, the manager suddenly scurried forward exclaiming loudly, "Thank you so much for coming! Hope you enjoyed the food. See you soon!", with a huge smile on his face.

However when our table and another asian table got up to pay, the same manager only told us how much the bill was before saying goodbye - it was the same treatment for the other asian table. No smiles and not even a thank you came from his mouth.

The worst part of the buffet besides the low quality yum char, was the fact that the only trolleys that came by our table were the ones serving fried food and meat/veg dumplings. None of the usual yum char delicacies that you would normally see (and expect) in a yum char restaurant.

When we requested for the other steamed items, they took such a long time to come and we would often have to ask the waiters to check on our orders. As stated above, I said that the only thing I liked in the buffet was the Prawn Dumplings (Ha Gao).
After we ordered 2 plates of it and liked it, we ordered a few plates more, since everything else tasted inedible. We had to wait approx 25mins before the dumplings were finally served to us. It was quite obvious the way they took their time to serve us was an attempt to make us full by the time the food came so we wouldn't order more.

The fact that they claimed that they did not have a menu reinforces my earlier point that they can basically serve you whatever they have at that point of time and not having to worry if they run out of anything because you can't request for the dishes from the menu! Even dishes like the BBQ Pork Pastry and BBQ Pork Bun had so little pork inside and it was mostly the outer fillings.

Although the buffet is $22.95, it's definitely not worth your money even though it's an all-you-can-eat buffet - the buffet at Ming Court is scarily below standards that you would not even want to eat your fill.

Ever since this incident, I have agreed with my parents and their friends that Ming Court serves one of the worst yum char in the whole of NZ (definitely the worst in my life) and I would never ever recommend this place to anyone I know.

Kura

Welcome to Kura, a modern & sophisticated Jap restaurant located in Queenstreet. It's easy to pass by this place because of the small sliding doors. Be careful when you step inside as there's a long and pretty steep staircase to walk down to the restaurant.

Table for bigger groups

Or for your average 4-6 people table

Mum & Dad introduced me to this place, after we saw the Russian ballet - Swan Lake! Ooh, the ballet was lovely and the dancers were so graceful & elegant. We really enjoyed ourselves.

For appetizers, we ordered Seafood Salad ($14.50). It's a mesclun salad with sashimi, prawns, squid, mussels & scallops. The salad was not bad, although the portion was miserable and there wasn't much seafood. Note that although the menu states 'scallops', we were only given 1 scallop. I'm not a big fan of salads so I didn't touch much of the greens and my parents thought it was so-so. All salads come with a choice of dressing and you can choose: Jap style dressing, Sesame dressing & Oil Free Jap Shiso Leaf dressing. We chose the Sesame dressing for ours.

Dad's main was Seafood Lovers Donburi ($18.50). It was quite a plain dish, just assorted sashimi with rice with a few pieces of egg & crabmeat. Thumb's up for the fresh sashimi and for the fact that the portion was quite big as compared to my main.

Rainbow Roll Sushi ($16.50). This was the biggest disappointment because although the presentation was nice, the salmon sashimi inside the sushi rolls were really tiny (as you can see). It was mostly rice and although there were slices of assorted sashimi on the outside, the overall taste was just average. The avocado & salmon inside was way too little and it wasn't worth the price.

For my main meal I had Kura Delicacies Donburi ($16). This was a mix of sashimi (just a few slices), raw egg yolk and according to their menu, assorted Jap delicacies which includes, grated yam potato paste, "natto" fermented soy bean & "mentaiko" spicy fish roe.

I thought it sounded quite unique & interesting so I gave it a try. I find this dish quite nice, although there's nothing much to rave about. The beans and vegetables didn't have much taste and the crabmeat & egg was just so-so. Portion was small as compared to the Seafood Lovers Donburi.

I pushed the lettuce away to expose the few slices of sashimi hiding below. The fish roe wasn't spicy at all and the first time I tried it I thought it was quite unique as even though the roe was tiny, it gave a small burst in your mouth however, towards the end of my dish I got quite sick of it.

After mixing everything together

Prawn Tempura ($13). Prawns were served hot & they were pretty fresh. Satisfying.

Note that all donburis come with miso soup. The miso soup there tastes ordinary, nothing special. It cost $3.50 if you order it on it's own. A bowl of steamed rice cost $3.50 as well.

Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab ($16). Served with ponzu-citrus sauce. Both my parents agree that you'll find higher quality ones in Singapore and it tasted just so-so to me.

My first impression of Kura was that although it was a little dark, I liked the ambience as it was quite spacious and comfy. Overall I thought food was just so-so and was quite pricey as compared to other Jap places in Auckland. If I come back again, I would probably order the Seafood Lovers Donburi because I wasn't that satisfied with mine and dishes like Rainbow Roll Sushi was just a waste of time.

They do have 2 other donburis - Teriyaki Chicken ($19) and Teriyaki Eel ($17). I find both of them too simple and the taste is quite common as I eat teriyaki dishes quite often so it would not be something I would order. They also have a few other grilled dishes, such as the Jap style Grilled Scotch Fillet ($24) and Grilled Beef Tongue Steak ($16), which I have not tried.
I've heard that the Beef Tataki ($14.50) is not appetizing and both of my parents didn't like it when they tried it on their previous visits here, which was why we didn't order it this time.
