Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao

Happy Chinese New Year everyone! Gong Xi Fa Cai, Xing Nian Kuai Le :) Hope all of you have a wonderful new year as we usher in the year of the ox.

I've been stuffing myself with so much chinese new year goodies it's scary! One of my favourites is the green pea thingys from Lavender. I bought 3 boxes :p it's so good!

Ok anyway, I've been to Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao 5 times since I've arrived in Singapore and it's incredible.

They've marked up prices for CNY and not all of their usual dishes are there. Like my favourite Spicy Mushroom and something noodles usually cost $7.50 but during CNY it went up to $8. I can't remember the exact name of my fav dish but it's jia jiang mian (spicy mushroom something...) and it's absolutely mind-blowing!

It's quite spicy so do make sure you have a drink and bring your own water bottle if you want to save 30cents, LOL. (they charge 30cents for a glass of water, and yes, free refills once you get a glass) I was practically choking when I first had this because it was so spicy but seriously, it's sooo good! I chose 'double width' for my noodles; there's a whole range that you can choose from. If you don't specify the noodles you want, they give you the normal thin noodles but the double width ones are really nice, they're thicker and much bigger. La mian means 'pulled' and handmade noodles.

The meat was chopped up into tiny pieces and the sauce at the bottom is quite spicy. A must have for me everytime I dine here. I always claim that I want to have 2 bowls of the spicy mushroom noodles but alas, everytime I finish my first bowl, I'm too full to order the second one. Food King says my appetite is scary and a good friend of mine recently said, "you don't have a big appetite, you have a monstrous one!"

But anyway, I love the soup in the xiao long baos here, I think it's the best I've tasted in Singapore (or anywhere else, for that matter!). Price: $4.80 (5 xiao long baos) The meat inside is really good too.

This is the stewed beef la mian (dry).

Stewed beef la mian (soup). Not spicy.

This is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Singapore. Ambience is fine, a nice place to dine and chat with friends. I just hate queuing outside, especially the outlet at Takashimaya - it drives me crazy! Like seriously, I went to the Taka outlet and the 6 of us had to wait like 45mins for a table. I went with Food King and we had to wait 20mins for a table. Goodness. You're given a dumb number and then you have to wait till your number shows on the screen. You know what's the stupidest thing? You can't make reservations! I think that's so mean! Imagine I want to have a nice dinner there and I have to wait outside for like an hour or whatever. The queue alone scares the crap out of me.

There's also another outlet at Bugis which annoyed me because they put a bowl of boiled peanuts at the table and it cost $2. I know, we could have told them we didn't want it but it just didn't occur to us at that moment in time (too hungry perhaps?) and we just ate the peanuts. At least for the outlet at taka, they asked us if we wanted pickles. Wet towels also cost 30cents per towel.

I also heard the Fried Rice there is really good but so far I haven't tried it, I'm too obsessed with the noodles. :p

If you live in Singapore and you have not been to this restaurant, you honestly have to go! For those Crystal Jade lovers who think everyone in Singapore has been to this place, you'd be surprised because I know people who have not been there before.

I recently had my 3rd pre-bday celebration there and it was really fun, thanks guys :)
